In response to COVID-19 and growing food insecurity, our Research and Action Group, KW Urban Harvester, is running a Grow-a-Row program that encourages gardeners to turn a portion of their lawns into gardens, or expand their gardens a little to grow food for those in need.

KWUH is supporting these efforts online with tips on growing and preserving produce. If you would like to support this project, you can sign up, donate in-kind (seeds, seedlings and garden tools) or donate funds to support those who would like to participate but cannot afford materials.

Grow-a-Row is a worldwide movement to ensure access to fresh produce at the local community level.

In times of crisis, we see how vulnerable our food system is to social and environmental shocks. Turning a portion of our lawns into gardens, or expanding our gardens a little, can provide much needed food for our Region's vulnerable population. Due to COVID-19, we are already seeing a doubling in the use of area food banks. The next few years of economic hardship could be lightened by YOUR participation in our Grow-a-Row program.

The approach is simple:

  1. Declare your intention to Grow-a-Row of food for donation or, in a messy patch. Whatever you prefer. :) Also you can garden at either your home or in a community garden. If you are experiencing food insecurity and need to support your own needs, that is perfectly fine too!

  2. KW Urban Harvester will support your journey online with tips on growing and preserving your produce.

  3. Special guests will be brought via publicized Zoom sessions throughout the season to help new growers gain confidence.

  4. If you so choose, KW Urban Harvester will be in contact with you about donations and arranging pick ups from your home!
