Job Title: Distro Program Coordinator

Compensation: $21.40/hr

Term: One (1) year contract with the possibility of extension.

Start Date: Monday, May 27, 2024

Hours: 15hrs per week

·         Must be available on Wednesday evenings.

·         Must have wide availability on Thursdays for weekly Distro.

·         Remaining hours to be scheduled as per Distro need.

Location: A combination of on-site at both Martin Luther University College and LSPRIG, along with various pick-ups and deliveries throughout the community.

Job Overview: The Distro Program Coordinator, in collaboration with Martin Luther University College (Luther) and Laurier Students’ Public Interest Research Group (LSPIRG), oversees and manages the Free Weekly Distro, facilitating all aspects to meet student need and Distro program values.

Background: Luther and LSPIRG run a Free Weekly Distro, a food program to fight food insecurity, located at Luther, which is located on Wilfrid Laurier University’s Waterloo campus.  The program’s details and our values can be found at lspirg.org/distro.

Job Description:

·         Responsible for following all public health and food handling safety guidelines.

·         Coordinating and facilitating weekly Distro operations.

o    Stock supplies.

o    Purchasing fresh food each week.

o    Picking up donated food from partners each week

o    Collecting donations from the community.

o    Pick-up COBS bread donation every Wednesday evening.

o    Ensuring extra food is donated to other organizations weekly as needed.

o    Coordinating or facilitating deliveries to students in need.

·         Responsible for training and supervising Distro volunteers, including coordinating and assigning responsibilities during all Distro open hours.

·         Collaborate with other Luther and LSPIRG staff on regular basis.

·         Tracking work-related kilometres and sending regular travel reports to managers.  

·         Other duties as assigned.

LSPIRG and Luther’s commitments to staff:

·         Provide anti-oppression training.

·         Provide training on conflict management and support networks available.

·         Communication around current COVID-19 protocols and school calendar to inform about student experience.

·         Provide orientation and introductions to all current stakeholders and make further connections, especially on campus.

·         Provide building access and expense credit card and applicable training.

·         Support around questions that arise.

·         Provide coverage when needed for medical appointments, sick days and vacation.

Qualifications and Experience:

·         Certification in safe food handling required (or must be obtained upon hire).

·         Valid G-level driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle (kms will be reimbursed in accordance with Laurier’s Expense Handbook).

·         Valid insurance with a safe driving record.

·         Comfortable with students and the broader community.

·         Experience working with marginalized communities an asset.

·         Experience with the Distro an asset

·         Experience in a post-secondary environment.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·         Embodying and supporting the Distro program’s values.

·         Strong interpersonal skills.

·         Ability to work autonomously with a high degree of accountability, dependability, and initiative.

 

Working Conditions

·         Comfortable lifting, carrying, setting down a minimum of 50 lbs independently (heavy boxes of food).

·         Required to work flexible hours, fulfilling Distro need.

·         Required to stand for extended periods of time.

·         Must be able to sit for prolonged periods and frequently enter and exit vehicle.

·         Must be comfortable working in a faith-based community.

·         Must be comfortable working in a dog-friendly office.

Martin Luther University College (formerly Waterloo Lutheran Seminary) is in Waterloo, Ontario and federated with Wilfrid Laurier University. As a federated college, Luther has its own board of governors which oversees the work of the institution. Students

Approximately 195 students are enrolled in Luther’s programs at any one time, and another 300 undergraduate students, registered at Wilfrid Laurier University, enroll in Luther courses as electives. Approximately twenty Luther students are undergraduates, while the remaining students are pursuing Master or PhD programs. Luther students come from more than thirty different faith traditions while some have no faith tradition at all.

Faculty & Staff

Luther is comprised of a dozen full-time faculty members who have earned doctoral degrees. Given the number of courses offered, many are taught by adjunct faculty who are specialists in their field. The school is supported by a team of 8 full-time staff members working in communications, student services, and administration departments.
